The European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland, in collaboration with the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC), hosted an event on 15 March 2024 highlighting the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.

The rapporteur Ciarán Cuffe MEP held a presentation followed by a panel discussion featuring Ali Grehan, the Architect for Dublin City Council and Oonagh Reid, Director at Arup. Pat Barry, CEO of the IGBC (Irish Green Building Council), who opened the discussion, commended the new law, calling it a "kick-start" for the much-needed decarbonisation of Ireland's building infrastructure.

The directive is anticipated to significantly decrease energy usage, contributing to the reduction of energy poverty and lowering energy expenses in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner. It also includes a new solar mandate aimed at boosting the number of solar-powered buildings, as well as a plan to gradually phase out the usage of fossil fuel boilers by 2024.

This legislation represents a step forward towards the decarbonisation of Europe, aligning with the long-term objectives of the European Union’s “Fit for 55” legislative package. The directive will circle back to the European Council for its adoption in the upcoming months.
