Artificial Intelligence Act: EP adopts historic law
The European Parliament has approved the Artificial Intelligence Act that ensures safety and compliance with fundamental rights, while boosting innovation.
Deirdre Clune, Shadow Rapporteur and MEP for Ireland South said, "The citizens of Europe expected us to step up and address these new powerful technologies and we owed it to them to deliver on that and I am delighted that we were able to. It marks the EU's commitment to shaping the future of AI in a way that is aligned with our values and protects our citizens. This new law will help to ensure that AI is developed and used in a responsible and ethical manner, and that it benefits everyone.
"Regulating foundation models is not inherently anti-innovation. On the contrary, it can foster a more trustworthy and reliable AI ecosystem, encouraging responsible innovation and attracting investment. By establishing clear guidelines and oversight mechanisms, the EU can create a conducive environment for AI development, ensuring that innovation aligns with societal values and ethical principles.”
The regulation, agreed in negotiations with member states in December 2023, was endorsed by MEPs with 523 votes in favour, 46 against and 49 abstentions.
It aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability from high-risk AI, while boosting innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in the field. The regulation establishes obligations for AI based on its potential risks and level of impact.
