Former MEP Mary Banotti remembered

It is with great sadness that the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland has learned of the death of former MEP Mary Banotti.

Born in Malahide in 1939, Mary Banotti served as an MEP for Dublin from 1984 to 2004. Elected for Fine Gael, she was a member of the European People’s Party in the Parliament.

During her years as an MEP, she served inter alia on the Committee on Citizens' Freedoms and Rights, Justice and Home Affairs, the Committee on Women's Rights, the Committee on Petitions, and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Protection. At various times also, she notably served as Vice Chair of the Committee on Culture, Youth, Education and the Media, a Member of the Bureau and a Quaestor.

Before becoming an MEP she presented a weekly programme on social welfare rights and information on RTÉ television.

Mary Banotti took part in Mná na hÉireann, an exhibition of portraits of all Irish women MEPs, past and present, commissioned by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland, and she was present for its launch at Leinster House in March to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024.
